Solange, a colleague of mine, told me about this listening test. It's about an important issue: senior drivers still on the roads. Shouldn't they be still driving? Should they be off the roads? Would you be still driving if you were, say, 70? If you want to read some more information on that issue, just read through
this, also from the

What such a controversial subject! I think that it all comes down to taking responsibility. We must to be conscious that as we grow old we lost abilities. Be ignorant of that can turn us into a risk for ourselves and the rest. On the other hand I understand how frustrating will be to face to the idea of lost a certain independence at this way. To sum up, in my opinion there is not a common age to hang up the car key. Each of us has to asses our abilities and act accordingly.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, quite controversial. All in all, it means taking away someone's rights. The car keys stand in many cases for freedom to do lots of things outdoors. In fact, having a car it's the only way some grandmothers, for example, have to rediscover reality: that is, now they can do things they could have never imagined before. Yet letting them to continue driving can be even more dangerous; as you say, the abilities they have to drive are not the same. If so, there should be a change, such as taking them off the roads.Who takes the decision? Anyway, check something I came across on the Internet: people telling about their personal stories about having senior drivers in their family. I'm going to upload it in a few minutes onto the blog.
DeleteAll the best
This is a difficult situation, because to assume that you are old must be hard. I think it's a doctor who decides if a person is qualificated for driving or not. I have an aunt who was driving until she was 70. I want to be like her :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know about that. Maybe assuming that you are getting old is as hard as being old, don't you think so? Or even better: the hardest thing is not to be able to do things you used to do. Life is life, you know ;)
DeleteIt´s always hard to "blow the whistle on your parents". What´s important, as the article suggests, is not to leave anyone stuck or isolated when their time comes to hang up their car keys... Taking them out with you is important, going for walks together... and do not forget we will all get there some day.
ReplyDeleteLOL :) That shouldn't be upsetting at all. I mean, the fact that someday we'll all hopefully get there. The thing is that we tend to forget about that, and we simply tend to be so objective when discussing about that issue that it seems we are never going to be like that.
Delete=-o Oh my Lord, so many things to do and such little time left
